Gamification refers to the application of classic gaming elements into the instructional design of a course. It’s a fantastic way of keeping your learner’s attention, getting them to think critically about the content, while having fun at the same time!

Sound effects

Positive and negative re-enforcement can be administered through positive and negative sound effects. It reminds the learner of their progress, keeps them audibly stimulated and, if using classic sounds from the past, can add a fun level of nostalgia.

Timer

A timer is a classic game feature. It is practical in that it lets the learner know how long they have to complete a task, but also pushes them into action. A timer can be a positive motivator that keeps the learner active.

Progress bar

If online courses are completed over a period of time, as opposed to all in one sitting, it can be easy for the learner to forget how much they’ve completed. A progress bar allows them to keep track of their progress and keeps the learner focused on their goal.

Map

A built-in map is a fantastic way of outlining the different sections of the online course. It enables the learner to keep track of their progress and also allows them to return to previous sections.

Avatar

An avatar is an icon that represents a person or character. Adding an avatar gives the course a face and something for the learner to connect with it as they navigate the course. Avatars can also show the learner how to use tools built into the course design.

Point-scoring

As with any online or offline game, scoring and collecting points is a great motivator. It positively reinforces the learner that they are absorbing and understanding the information being presented to them.

Simulations

Simulations are great for immersing the learner in the content. Virtual worlds and 360° videos/images allow the learner to examine different environments without physically moving. Simulations can also be administered via a thoughtful scenario, which the learner works their way through by answering questions.
