Sex on our Screens: critical sexual literacy skills
The Learning Rooms worked with Active* Consent to develop a bespoke eLearning experience designed to increase young people’s critical sexual literacy skills, with a focus on sexual media, pornography, body image and consent.
About Active* Consent
Active* Consent is an initiative that encourages young people to have positive and confident sexual health and wellbeing. They work with teachers, parents, college staff and policy makers. The Active* Consent programme includes workshops; drama presentations; engaging with the online community and digital training resources.
The Challenge
Active* Consent needed to empower young people to understand sexual representations in the media and to think critically about the media they see. It was important that students (15-16 years of age) understood how sexual media is produced by the film, television and porn industries. Active* Consent also wanted to provide a platform for students to explore and understand the idea of ‘sexual scripts’ (the assumptions we make and the common ways we talk about sex and sexuality. Finally, they wanted to empower young people to understand their bodies better, and to realise that everybody is unique and special.
The Solution
The introduction to sexual media course is based around eight cartoon-style illustrated characters from a variety of backgrounds. We follow their conversations and experiences as they go about their own sexual journeys. The course features sophisticated videos and real-life examples to make the content relevant and relatable. It also contains bespoke illustrations that demonstrate the body and sexual organs. The course develops critical sexual literacy skills.
