Active bystander eLearning

Being an Active Bystander in Ireland’s Arts and Creative sectors

The Learning Rooms worked with Screen Ireland, Safe to Create and Irish Theatre Institute to develop a one hour eLearning module on how to be an active bystander. The eLearning module is available on the Safe to Create website for anyone working in the arts and creative sectors.

The Challenge

Screen Ireland, in collaboration with ITI, wanted to develop a course on being an active bystander. This was part of the Safe to Create program for the arts and creative sectors. The key messages for learners were:

  • To understand the importance of being an active bystander
  • To recognise all forms of inappropriate behaviours
  • To understand how to use different intervention strategies

It was important that learners could recognise how being an active bystander can help create a positive workplace culture.

The Solution

The Learning Rooms developed a one-hour interactive self-paced eLearning course. It  explores the what, why, when and how of being an active bystander. Learners are asked to reflect on different scenarios and explore options for intervening safely as active bystanders. Importantly, they also learn about the possible consequences of not intervening when they witness inappropriate behaviour. At the end of the course, the learner demonstrates their knowledge with a brief assessment.

This is the fourth course we have worked with The Learning Rooms on and they never fail to impress. This course needed something different, and Sarah and Ryan were brilliant at coming up with new ideas and ways to reinforce the message we wanted to get across.

The first person to do the course sent this message ‘I have just done the Bystander Training and I have to say it is really excellent.’
