Opioid Overdose Awareness eLearning

The Learning Rooms worked with the HSE to develop the online component of their blended ‘Opioid Overdose Awareness and Naloxone Administration’ eLearning.

About HSE

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is a large organisation of over 100,000 people, whose job is to run all of the public health services in Ireland. The HSE manages services through a structure designed to put patients and clients at the centre of the organisation.

The Challenge

  • The HSE needed to develop an eLearning module on the administration of naloxone, to be followed up with in-person training.
  • The training was required to provide frontline workers with the skills to recognise, intervene and respond to an opioid overdose. It needed to include the administration of naloxone. Naloxone is a prescription medication used to temporarily reverse the effects of opioid drugs.
  • The training would be mandatory for those working in a place with the naloxone drug on-site.
  • There would be a requirement to complete an assessment at the end of the module.

The Solution

  • The Learning Rooms provided instructional design and eLearning development services to develop a one-hour eLearning module in Articulate Rise.
  • Through a mix of interactive activities and video, the online module presents the theory around opioids, statistics in Ireland, how to respond in the event of an overdose and how to administer naloxone.
  • The online module includes knowledge check questions throughout to engage learners and an assessment at the end to ensure the learning outcomes have been achieved.

The design process by the team from the initial scope to the signed off module was smooth and client centred. Each step of the review and feedback process was followed through in a timely and professional manner.

I have personally recommended The Learning Rooms team to my colleagues for programmes they are working on. Nearly 1,000 learners have now completed the Module in the five months since it launched and the learner feedback which was completed by over 200 learners has been positive.
