eLearning for the arts and creative sectors
Unconscious bias eLearning for the arts
The Learning Rooms worked with Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann, Irish Theatre Institute (ITI) and Safe to Create to develop online training for Ireland’s arts and creative sectors. The unconscious bias eLearning module is available on the Safe to Create website.
About Safe to Create, Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann and ITI
Safe to Create promotes dignity at work in Ireland’s arts and creative sectors. It transforms culture through training, information and support. It is managed by Irish Theatre Institute on behalf of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media in partnership with the Arts Council, Screen Ireland and Minding Creative Minds.
Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann is the national agency for the Irish film, television drama, animation and documentary industry. They offer practical support for development, production, distribution and promotion, as well as the development of skills.
ITI is a leading national resource organisation for the professional Irish theatre sector. ITI provides information, online research tools, resources and support to professionals in Irish theatre.
The Challenge
The Safe to Create programme provides safer working conditions for artists and arts workers. It is important that anyone working in the arts and creative industry understands unconscious bias and its impacts. They also need to recognise their role and responsibility in tackling unconscious bias. This is not only for their own benefit but also for the benefit of the audiences they reach on a global scale.
Another aim was to promote inclusive work environments. Embracing diversity in skills, talent and people combined to enrich the work produced by the arts and creative sectors. Ultimately, to impact audiences in a positive way.
The Solution
Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann, in collaboration with ITI, partnered with The Learning Rooms. We developed an interactive, self-paced eLearning course on addressing unconscious bias: basic awareness in the arts and creative sectors, for the Safe to Create program.
The course helps learners understand unconscious bias, how biases are formed, the impacts and triggers, as well as strategies to tackle unconscious bias in the workplace.
It is divided into four sections and takes the learner approximately one hour to complete. At the end of the course, the learner demonstrates their knowledge with a brief assessment.
The course is relevant and accessible to a wide audience of learners working in the arts and creative sectors in Ireland.
“The Learning Rooms were excellent at turning a text driven course into a really interactive learning experience. They worked with our design palette to create a visually pleasing course that fits in with our brand. Sarah was great to work with and has the patience of a saint.”
