The Challenge
StormGeo identified a critical need to enhance weather interpretation skills among two groups of offshore personnel: those working on offshore wind farms and those working on oil and gas rigs. Their tutor led training model, while very well regarded, was difficult to scale. While weather forecasts and observations are essential tools for operations, the ability to accurately interpret this data and understand its limitations directly impacts safety and efficiency.
The challenge was to develop online training for delivery worldwide that would empower personnel to make confident, informed decisions about offshore operations based on weather conditions. This was particularly crucial as misinterpretation of weather data could lead to unsafe working conditions or unnecessary operational delays.
The Solution
The Learning Rooms and StormGeo developed two versions of a seven-module course. Course one is for the wind farm industry, while the second was for the oil and gas industry.
Core modules cover:
- Understanding and interpreting weather charts and marine forecasts
- Identifying and responding to adverse weather conditions
- Working with numerical prediction models and human forecaster insights
- Analysing forecast accuracy through observation comparison
- Evaluating forecast reliability using confidence statements
The practical case studies in this course help participants apply weather interpretation skills to real-world offshore wind scenarios and operational decisions.
