Building Resilience online course
This evidence-based Building Resilience course aims to improve resilience, well-being, and mental health. Learners will be introduced to key psychological findings which optimise the ability to adapt to changing circumstances, coping with stress and negative life events. Experiential tasks are included to embed new knowledge in learners’ own lives.
This self-paced online course provides an interactive learning experience. Written by Dr James Erskine and Dr Linda Perkins-Porras, it is delivered through six sessions made up of short eLearning modules, video content, interactive content and exercises. You will practically apply your learning through a series of Personal Development Activities.
This course will appeal to a wide range of people who face challenges in their lives. Working professionals experiencing stress or burnout. Students coping with academic demands and life transitions. Session 1: Introduction to Building Resilience
Introduces resilience and wellbeing. Discusses why these are crucial for individuals in the modern world and how they can be increased.
Session 2: Self-care and Goal Setting
Self-care, goal setting and planning examines why setting goals is vital to good wellbeing; how to set goals simply and effectively, and enhance motivation and confidence in accomplishing them.
Session 3: Thinking Styles
Thinking styles examines our habitual ways of thinking. Perfectionism and procrastination are also included, and we look at more useful ways of managing thoughts and emotions.
Session 4: Self-regulation
Focuses on self-regulation, self-control and building resilience. Will examine ineffective methods of regulating emotions and behaviour, and discusses ways these can be replaced with more useful and effective self-control techniques.
Session 5: Introduction to The Self
This session explores how people see themselves and the impact it has on their daily life. It will also examines personal values and beliefs, encouraging more flexible thinking and behaviour.
Session 6: The Social Self
The final session focusses on the social self, social interaction, and well-being. It will explore how we impact others, and how other people affect our thoughts, emotions and behaviour. It will also considers ways to build better relationships with others and reduce unnecessary conflict.

James Erskine has a research based doctorate in psychology and a second clinical doctorate in counselling psychology. He is senior lecturer at St George’s, University of London. In addition to teaching and conducting psychological research he also sees patients in clinical practice each week with a view to helping them build healthier more satisfying lives. His research interests centre around coping strategies, individual and organisational health and building resilience.
Linda Perkins-Porras has a doctorate in psychology and a PG Dip in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. She is a senior lecturer in behavioural medicine and psychology in the Institute of Medical and Biomedical Education at St George’s University of London. As well as teaching the undergraduate psychology and behavioural medicine curriculum for the medical and biomedical science courses, she led the personal tutor programme for medical students for 5 years and was responsible for the pastoral support of around 2500 students. Her research interests and publications focus on stress, wellbeing and resilience and she supervises research students interested in this field.
