What is an animated explainer video?

Animated explainer videos are short animations that clearly explain an idea or concept. They help turn abstract concepts and processes into relatable and memorable learning experiences. Educational animations often contain video, animated characters, music, voice and other media.

Our animation process

Every animated explainer video follows the same clear stages, from first idea to finished video.

  • Explore. We work with you to understand the concept, message and audience the animation needs to reach.
  • Architect. We write the script and storyboard the animation scene by scene, agreed with you before any animation work begins.
  • Create. Our animators bring the storyboard to life, adding voiceover, music and sound effects as needed.
  • Test. We check the finished animation, including captions and transcripts, so it works well for every learner.

Frequently asked questions

A few questions we’re often asked about animated explainer videos.

How is an animated explainer video different from a live action video?

Animation works well for abstract ideas, characters or scenarios that would be difficult or costly to film, and it’s often faster to update later since you’re not reshooting with actors. Live action video suits content that needs a real person, a real environment or genuine testimony, which is better handled through our video for learning service.

How long does an animated explainer video take?

This depends on length and animation style, but a short, simple animation can often be turned around in about two weeks, while more detailed motion graphics take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline once we understand your project.

What animation styles do you offer?

We offer everything from rapid, simple character animation through to bespoke motion graphics, so we can fit a range of budgets and levels of visual complexity.

Do you provide the script, or do we need to write it?

Either works. We can write the full script from scratch, or work from a script or content you’ve already prepared.

Are your animated videos accessible?

Yes. We provide captions and transcripts as standard, so learners can follow the content without relying on audio.

Can animation be used inside an eLearning course?

Both. Animation works well embedded inside a bespoke or rapid eLearning course, or as a standalone video used on its own, for example to launch a new product or communicate a policy change.
