Let’s be honest. When most people hear “compliance training”, they don’t exactly get excited. It often conjures images of lengthy slide decks, tick box exercises and content that feels like it was designed to test your patience rather than actually teach you something.
But here’s the thing. Compliance training matters. It protects your organisation, your employees and often the people you serve. The challenge isn’t whether to do it. The challenge is doing it well.
At The Learning Rooms, we’ve been helping Irish organisations transform their compliance training for over two decades. We know that compliance doesn’t have to mean dull. In fact, when it’s done right, it can genuinely change behaviour and create safer, more ethical workplaces.
Why compliance training fails (and how to fix it)
Most compliance training fails for the same reasons. The content is generic, the delivery is passive and there’s no connection to the learner’s actual job. People click through screens, pass a quiz that tests knowlege rather than application and promptly forget everything they learned.
Effective compliance training works differently. It puts learners in realistic scenarios where they have to make decisions. It connects policies to real consequences. And it respects people’s time by focusing on what they actually need to know and do.
Our approach to compliance training
We offer several ways to tackle your compliance training needs, depending on your budget, timeline and how specific your requirements are.
Bespoke eLearning development
When your compliance requirements are unique to your organisation or industry, you need a learning experience designed just for you. Our bespoke eLearning service creates training tailored specifically to your policies, procedures and workplace culture.
We work closely with your subject matter experts to understand exactly what behaviours you need to embed. Then our instructional designers and developers build interactive, scenario based content that puts learners in situations they’ll actually face. This isn’t about reading policies on screen. It’s about practising how to apply them.
Rapid eLearning development
Sometimes you need quality compliance training delivered quickly. Perhaps regulations have changed, or you’re rolling out a new policy and need to train your people straight away. Our rapid eLearning service gives you professionally designed, instructionally sound content with shorter timelines and to suit tighter budgets. It’s quick to build, but it doesn’t compromise on learning design principles.
Off the shelf eLearning
For common compliance topics, our off the shelf catalogue offers a cost effective solution. These courses cover essential workplace skills and can be deployed immediately through your LMS. They’re ideal for getting new starters up to speed quickly or refreshing existing employees on core compliance areas.
Tailored eLearning
Sometimes you want the speed and affordability of off the shelf content, but with a more personalised feel. Our tailored eLearning service takes our eLearning courses from our catalogue and adapts them to your organisation. We can add your branding, incorporate your policies and procedures, include scenarios set in your workplace and even feature your own people. This gives learners content that feels relevant and familiar, without the time and cost of building something entirely from scratch.
Build your own with eXcolo
If your L&D team wants to develop compliance training in house, our eXcolo Toolkit provides everything you need. It includes Instructional Design training, Articulate Storyline training, Â Articulate Storyline templates, resources and ongoing support to help you create engaging eLearning content yourselves. This works particularly well for organisations that need to update compliance content frequently or want to build internal capability.
Compliance training we’ve delivered for Irish organisations
We’ve worked with organisations across the public and private sectors to deliver compliance training that actually works. Here are a few examples.
Data Protection eLearning for OneLearning. The Learning Rooms worked with OneLearning to design and develop an eLearning course in Articulate Storyline about data protection and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Safeguarding eLearning for Scout leaders. Scouting Ireland worked with The Learning Rooms to create a 75 minutes safeguarding eLearning course for Scout leaders.
GDPR online training for RTÉ staff, contractors, and journalists. In response to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), The Learning Rooms worked with RTÉ to develop GDPR online training about data protection. The eLearning was to help staff understand the basics of the GDPR as well as know when to ask the Data Protection Officer for help with a data protection issue.
What makes compliance training effective?
Based on our experience, the best compliance training shares a few key characteristics.
- It’s relevant. Generic content gets ignored. When learners see their own workplace, their own challenges and their own decisions reflected in the training, they pay attention.
- It’s active. Reading policies is passive. Making decisions in realistic scenarios is active. Active learning sticks.
- It’s concise. Nobody needs a three hour course on data protection basics. Respect your learners’ time and they’ll respect your content.
- It’s accessible. Compliance training often needs to reach everyone in an organisation, including people with disabilities. We build accessibility in from the start, not as an afterthought.
- It’s measurable. You need to know whether your training is working. We help you build in meaningful assessments and track the right metrics.
