How often should fire safety training be refreshed?

Fire safety training is not a once off task. Workplaces change, staff move on and knowledge fades over time, so training needs refreshing to stay effective. The question is how often.

Irish law does not set a fixed expiry date for fire safety training. That said, there is clear good practice guidance, along with a few situations that should bring a refresher forward regardless of the calendar.

The general rule of thumb

Most guidance recommends refreshing fire safety training annually. This keeps procedures and hazard awareness front of mind, rather than something staff learned once and half remember months later. Higher risk workplaces, such as those in manufacturing, hospitality or healthcare, often benefit from refreshing even more frequently.

When to refresh sooner

Some situations call for a refresher well before the annual mark comes around. These include:

  • A new employee joining the organisation
  • A change to the building layout, evacuation routes or assembly point
  • New equipment, materials or processes being introduced that change the fire risk
  • A near miss or fire incident occurring, or the same type of incident happening more than once
  • Staff taking on a specific fire safety responsibility, such as coordinating an evacuation on their floor

Any of these can make existing training out of date almost overnight, regardless of when the last session took place.

Why annual refreshers make sense

Fire procedures are the kind of knowledge people rarely use in daily life, which is exactly why it fades. An annual refresher keeps evacuation routes, extinguisher types and emergency actions current in people’s minds, so they can act quickly and correctly if the moment ever comes.

It also gives you a clean, defensible record. If you are ever asked to demonstrate compliance with your training obligations, being able to show that every member of staff completed fire safety training within the last twelve months is a strong position to be in.

Making refreshers easy to manage

Refresher training does not need to mean pulling staff away from their work or booking a trainer every year. Delivering fire safety training through eLearning makes annual refreshers simple to schedule, easy to track and consistent across every member of staff, wherever they are based.

Our Basic Fire Safety eLearning course is a practical way to deliver both initial training and annual refreshers, with completion tracking built in so you always know where your team stands.
