World Hand Hygiene Day is this Sunday the 5th of May 2019. World Hand Hygiene Day reminds us of the importance of correct hand hygiene practice in healthcare and that it directly saves lives. The World Health Organisation (WHO) campaign “Clean care for all: It’s in your hands” calls on healthcare professionals to keep increasing standards of hand hygiene. The annual campaign aims to maintain a global profile on the importance of hand hygiene in healthcare. WHO want to ‘bring people together’ in support of hand hygiene improvement globally. This year, the focus will be the importance of good hand hygiene practices as part of improving patient safety globally to achieve universal health coverage.
Infection Prevention and Control
Hand hygiene is part of infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. It must incorporate correct hand washing techniques and training for healthcare professionals is crucial. Promoting hand hygiene requires coordinated efforts by many different health system stakeholders to eliminate the risk of acquiring health care-associated infections. The Learning Rooms in partnership with the Health Management Institute of Ireland have developed a Hand Hygiene online course.
