Mental health and wellbeing in the workplace has moved firmly to the top of the agenda for organisations across Ireland and the UK. And rightly so. When employees are struggling, the effects are felt across the whole organisation, from increased absenteeism and reduced productivity to higher staff turnover and a drop in team morale. The good news is that organisations do not have to wait until problems arise. With the right training in place, you can build a culture where wellbeing is taken seriously and people feel genuinely supported.
In this post, we look at why wellbeing training matters and what good eLearning on the topic looks like.
Why mental health training matters in the workplace
Mental health challenges are more common than many people realise. Research consistently shows that a significant proportion of employees experience stress, anxiety or burnout at some point in their working lives. However, the workplace environment itself can either make things better or worse. A culture where people are encouraged to talk openly about how they are feeling, where stress is recognised early and where practical support is available, can make an enormous difference.
Training plays an important role in creating that kind of culture. In particular, it helps in a number of ways:
- It raises awareness. Many people are unaware of the early signs of poor mental health in themselves or in colleagues. As a result, problems can go unaddressed for longer than they should.
- It reduces stigma. When mental health is discussed openly through training, it sends a clear message that it is a normal part of working life and not something to be ashamed of.
- It gives people practical tools. Good wellbeing training does not just raise awareness; it also equips people with strategies they can actually use, whether that is managing stress, practising mindfulness or finding a better balance between work and home life.
- It supports managers. Managers are often the first to notice when a team member is struggling. Therefore, training that helps them have those conversations with confidence is invaluable.
Why eLearning works well for wellbeing training
eLearning is particularly well suited to wellbeing topics. Because the subject matter can feel personal or sensitive, some people find it easier to engage with it in a self-paced, private environment. In addition, eLearning allows learners to work through the content at a time and place that suits them. This supports the kind of flexible, balanced approach that good wellbeing practice encourages.
Well-designed wellbeing eLearning also uses real-world scenarios and reflective activities that help learners apply what they have learned to their own situation. Rather than simply presenting information, it encourages genuine reflection and, importantly, action.
Our four wellbeing courses
At The Learning Rooms, we offer four online wellbeing courses that cover the key themes organisations need to address. Each course is interactive, accessible and comes with a digital certificate of completion.
- Looking after your mental health in the workplace — this course teaches participants about the importance of minding their mental health at work. It covers how the workplace can affect mental wellbeing, how to recognise the signs of poor mental health and practical strategies for staying well. Participants also develop a personal Workplace Wellbeing Action Plan, which makes the learning immediately actionable.
- Managing stress at work — designed for all staff who want to be more proactive about managing stress, this course explores what work-related stress is, the difference between positive and negative stress and practical ways to reduce stress both in and outside the workplace. It also highlights where people can find support if they are struggling.
- Mindfulness in the workplace — this course provides an overview of the fundamental principles of mindfulness and how they can improve wellbeing at work. It covers the benefits of mindfulness and, importantly, gives participants practical techniques they can incorporate into their working day to improve focus, reduce stress and support positive mental health.
- Nutrition for Work Productivity — this course helps participants make informed nutrition and hydration choices that support energy levels and cognitive function at work. It covers how to build balanced meals using the Food Pyramid, how to read food labels and how to practise mindful eating to sustain performance throughout the working day.
Rolling out wellbeing training across your organisation
All courses can be purchased individually or licensed for your whole organisation and delivered through your existing learning management system. They are available as part of our off-the-shelf eLearning catalogue. This makes them a cost-effective option for organisations that need to train large numbers of staff.
Each course features closed captions, keyboard navigation and screen reader compatibility, so they are accessible to all learners. Furthermore, learners receive a digital certificate of completion, which makes it easy to track and record training across your team.
